The Leftovers

Possibly one of Brisbane's most notorious and undocumented punk bands, The Leftovers only released one EP, "Cigarettes and Alcohol" in 1979. The Leftovers were well known for being unruly and their shows were constantly shut down by police. Ed Wreckage said "Everybody was starting to get really bad drug habits and walking over each other's backs to finance the habits" in a 2000 interview about the bands disbanding. The band quickly went downhill apparently after suicide attempts, prison, and early deaths. Download this album for some historical Brisbane punk.

MASSAPPEAL

One of the first hardcore bands of Australia, MASSAPPEAL is a thrashy skate punk and hardcore four piece fronted by Randy Reimann out of Sydney. One of my personal favorites that i'll be posting out of Australia! The first song "Rat in a hole" will have you immediately hooked. MASSAPPEAL's album Nobody Likes A Thinker is just straight fast hardcore and thrash put out in 1986. Not much else to say, just listen!

VENOM P. STINGER

Venom P. Stinger was a late 80's / early 90's raw punk band from Melbourne with notable members Dugald Mackenzie and Mick Turner. Makenzie and Turner were also in The Sick Things and Fungus Brains. Dugald was known for his intense live performances and raw vocals. Meet My Friend Venom was Venom P. Stinger's first album released in 1986 on No Master's Voice. Dugald passed away in 2004.

The Saints

Kicking off the Australian punk month is none other than The Saints. The Saints were one of the earliest quintessential punk bands of Australia. Hailing from Brisbane where the Queensland Police Task Force was notorious for shutting down all of the early punk shows (including the notorious fuck up band The Leftovers), The Saints released their first single "(I'm) Stranded" in late 1976. By 1977 EMI signed The Saints and they moved out to the UK where they quickly realized they didn't fit in with the label and what they wanted for them. Essentially a fast Rock 'n' Roll band, The Saints didn't feel the need to dress up in punk garb and have the typical "punk look" that EMI wanted them to have. EMI would eventually drop them after a small boost of success. The Saints continued to make music through the 1980's with a handful of lineup changes and more recently reunited at ATP to play "(I'm) Stranded" in its entirety. This album is a must have!
